EVLO Energy Storage Inc. (EVLO), a subsidiary of Hydro-Québec, has announced a major milestone in its partnership with Dominion Energy. The company’s flagship battery energy storage system (BESS), EVLOFLEX, has been upgraded with advanced safety features to meet Dominion’s stringent requirements and has achieved UL 9540 certification—a critical safety standard for energy storage systems.
The UL 9540 certification highlights EVLO’s expertise in developing safe, reliable, and high-performance energy storage solutions. This certification process evaluates all aspects of a BESS, including its design, production, testing, installation, and operation. The latest version of EVLOFLEX incorporates enhanced safety measures, such as an external fire panel control, to simplify regulatory approvals and align with safety standards like NFPA 72.
“We are proud of our team’s success in upgrading EVLOFLEX to meet Dominion’s specific safety requirements,” said Michel Cousineau, Chief Technology Officer of EVLO. “These advancements further reinforce our commitment to safety and reliability while setting a new benchmark for the industry.”
The certification process included rigorous UL 9540A testing conducted by independent certification agencies. The enhanced EVLOFLEX system offers advanced fire prevention measures, hazard detection, and passive gas evacuation capabilities, even during power outages. These innovations go beyond existing safety standards, such as NFPA 69, ensuring robust protection against potential failures.
A Commitment to Safer Energy Storage
EVLOFLEX is a utility-grade BESS designed to stabilize power grids, optimize asset performance, and ensure reliable energy management. Dominion Energy plans to deploy more than 300 MWh of EVLOFLEX systems across three large-scale projects in Virginia. These installations align with Dominion’s Grid-Transformation Plan and support the Virginia Clean Economy Act (VCEA), which aims for 100% clean energy by 2050.
“Our collaboration with Dominion Energy reflects our customer-focused approach and dedication to delivering innovative energy storage solutions that meet the highest safety standards,” said Sonia St-Arnaud, President and CEO of EVLO. “As part of Hydro-Québec, one of North America’s largest renewable energy providers, our mission is to support utilities in modernizing their energy systems while ensuring safety and performance.”
The Virginia projects, set to begin commissioning in 2025 and 2026, mark a significant step toward modernizing energy infrastructure while meeting clean energy goals. EVLOFLEX’s enhanced safety features will also be available for future clients, demonstrating EVLO’s leadership in creating cutting-edge, certified energy storage solutions.
